Proving that there's so much more we can learn about our own bodies despite centuries of study, Belgian doctors have discovered something that explains basketball players' "bad knees": a previously unknown part of the human body. Science Daily reports that Dr. Steven Claes and Prof. Dr. Johan Bellemans, orthopedic surgeons from University Hospitals Leuven, have discovered a "new" ligament located in the human knee. Named the anterolateral ligament (ALL), this newly identified body part may hold the key to explaining "pivot shifts" – further knee difficulties experienced by patients who had already recovered from previous anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries. ACL injuries are commonly sustained by athletes, gymnasts, and martial artists, due to the physically intensive nature of their activities.
